I’ve just been watching Dave Gorman’s programme from last week and he had a good bit on malapropisms. I particularly liked ‘flaming yawn’ - as in ‘I’m going to cook some flaming yawn for dinner’

[Being pedantic Steve, I think they call the fire protection that lowers in the theatre a "Safety Curtain"? Sorry for being pendantish.]

The word "malapropism" (and its earlier variant "malaprop") comes from a character named "Mrs. Malaprop" in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's 1775 play The Rivals. Mrs. Malaprop frequently misspeaks (to comic effect) by using words which don't have the meaning that she intends but which sound similar to words that do.
