I once had a conversation with a drunk Norwegian, who told me that Allo Allo was a work of genius "the thing about you British is, you can laugh about the war. No-one else in Europe can do this." I didn't stick around to find out whether he still had that opinion when sober.

Allo Allo was a staple of Swedish telly when I was there (English with subtitles). Second only in popularity to Beer, Women and Bricks - or Auf Wiedersehen, Pet as it's more commonly known.

Beer, women and bricks was an excellent programme, albeit of its time. At least, that's how I recall it.

I lived with a German student who was totally aghast that we could laugh at Halo Halo, she thought we were terrible.

Last time I lived in Moscow I watched the entire series of 'Allo 'Allo, dubbed into Russian. They even tried to get the accents right.

If he's not already on it, can we please add Dan Ackroyd to the list of people who are secretly Canadian?
