I have recently bought an Inov-8 backpack and horizontal bladder. Due to the bladder being divided into 5 (semi-)sub-compartments by dividers in the plastic, I can't seem to empty it completely after use and a bit of water always remains (The dividers are at the top like the opening for filling the bladder, so turning it upside down doesn't help.).

Should I just keep the bladder aired by keeping the opening wedged open at all times? I have heard of storing hydration bladders in the freezer, but this seems counter-intuitive when there's still water inside it - or would it be ok? If so, would it also be ok to fold the bladder and squish it a bit when putting it into the freezer (We only have a small freezer.)?

This is what the bladder looks like: http://www.play.com/Sports-Outdoors/Sports/4-/24871068/665318210/Inov8-Horizontal-Water-Bladder-2-litres/ListingDetails.html?_%24ja=tsid:13315 cat:24871068 prd:24871068&ef_id=-8dPS4wMKmEAAAYn:20130406143936:s

Thanks!

I have a Camelbak bladder, which has a pair of supports which fold down from the side of the filling aperture and keep it wedged open. Eventually, it dries out. I only use it occasionally, though - only once this winter. Wouldn't know how to empty it out in a hurry.

Milton it, or any kind of baby disinfectant and store it in the freezer.

seems to me it's not a well thought out design. glad I haven't got one.

to clean my bladder out I flush it through with steradent, bleed it through the pipe (leaving it for a while when it's thru the pipe , then empty and blow the excess water out. I then leave a bottle in the opening (to keep it open so the the air to get at it ) and turn upside down.

I guess that may not be that helpful in your case. best of luck .

Thanks, guys!

Johnny, that's what I was wondering about re freezing - if there's still water in it which will freeze, won't it damage the bladder?

Flip, their new bladder might be better - but I had to return it because it wasn't compatible with the (old-style) backpack I had got (even though it said it would be on the website where I ordered it from). It's the only rucksack that felt comfortable on my back, but does seem to have some drawbacks...

Its never damaged mine. If I am leaving it for a while, I dismantle completely (the hose and mouthpiece usually fully detach even if they look like they dont) and dry it out, but if its just a week or two it lives in the freezer.

Unless my wife finds it, then it lives wherever she wants it to, but not the freezer, because my running stuff is everywhere already, and I should tidy up after myself more.

Cheers, Johnny! (Since I don't have a wife, no danger of her finding it either.)

Will need to look for some kind of disinfectant like you and Flip advised next time I go shopping.

(If anyone with experience of emptying out the actual Inov-8 bladder sees this post, I'd still be grateful for their tips though.)

Yep,sticking in the freezer! And another top tip for bladders, when you use it - turn it upside down and suck all the air out - it stops all that sloshing around, anyone who's followed someone wilth a sloshing bladder will know how annoying it is :-)
