The Chairman of Grimsby Tri is a GP. He was running in the HBHM. Apparently he gave assistance to the runner concerned. Prior to this he also stopped during the race to give assistance to five other runners. There was a drop-out rate in excess of 500 people this year. Clearly something needs to be done. |

to lessen the risks they should start the race earlier say 9 o clock this would keep the mid day sun to a lower level and also give out water bottles instead of cups , this happens every year , and for what they charge for entry is a small price to pay compared with peoples lives,

I agree with Jacko. Health and Safety was quoted by one water station volunteer as why they cant give out bottles in the comments within Hull Daily Mail website. How crazy. Other events hand out bottles and as for health and safety, what about the health of the runners. Maybe someone somewhere tripped on a bottle and got injured? I would rather risk that that then people getting severely dehydrated. The argument against a earlier start time is for people travelling to the event, maybe they are correct in they would lose some entrants, but better that then risk running in stupid temperatures. |

We had water pouches at Sunderland 10k on Sunday, the first time I've seen them used. Better than cups, less danger of tripping than bottles.

Paper cups are better than plastic. Ok, they get a bit slippery when discarded, but you can at least squeeze the top closed to make a little slot to drink from. Even then, they're only any good if the've got enough water in. I had to take two cups from one water station. Both were less than half full. Seventy percent of both ended up on me rather than in me.
