[Oooh, these are good, now that Angus has successfully moved us on from my Page 3 picture! I may have to write a real 150 words of background, journey into running and where running fits in now. I know, you can't wait...! G ]

Akie, in my twenties, I spent a few weekends a month refereeing football matches. Looking back, I now wish I had been more into my running then and my regular weekend exercise would have been more enjoyable.

To be fair I only really had one off-season of good running which helped immeasurably before I stopped Rugby, bit of a shame.
What made you stop refereeing?

Mainly to spend more time with my family. If I was to travel across the county to do a game, arriving over an hour before kick-off, officiate game, shower and travel home, I could be out for 5-6 hours. That aside from dealing with the usual idiots who moan at each and every decision you make, however blatant the foul.
Apart from a race proper, I can at least go out for a long run and come back in time for a family breakfast together.

In my younger years I had been quite fit through canoe racing, then I had a phase of doing a bit of recreational cycling/mountain biking.
By the start of '09 I was 38, carrying a bit of weight I didn't want and finding that the walk up 2 flights of stairs to our top bedroom needed a staging post on the landing to get my breath back.
Mrs N was having a go at the Weight Watchers points diet so I joined in. Horrified by how little I was allowed to eat I looked at how to gain "bonus points" and discovered that a short run would get me some extra snap! Result!
Initially the problem was actually managing that short run but before too long I'd got hooked on the running and dropped the diet.
9 years and 23 half marathons later here I am. (146)

[decorum, lol! The anecdote I get to tell is: I had to have 3 operations, all under general anaesthetic, not local, to put me back together again. The last was the skin graft from the side of my head to rebuild my lip. The second was 42 stitches to sew up the cuts and to put my lip back on my gum. But when I woke up from the first and said, "Have you done the skin graft?", they replied, "No, we just scrubbed the rocks out of your face. We didn't think you'd want to be awake for that!" G ]

[Here's my attempt at a real 150 word answer...]
I’ve always enjoyed sport: rugby and athletics at school, sailing and skiing as a young adult, and bits of gym and general fitness throughout.
In my thirties I got more into mountain biking, doing some of the spectacular routes around Scotland, on purpose build cross country courses. Unfortunately one of these that paralleled a downhill course spat me out, with the resultant mushed up face shown in my profile.
I was recuperating at home and getting cabin fever, so went out walking on our beautiful local hills. From the top of one I ran down, in my hiking books with coat tails flapping, wondering if there was some way you could run on hills. Someone told me about trail shoes and six months later I was in a running club and signed up to marathon.
10 years, 21 marathons and ultras later, hopefully this can be my forever hobby! G

Bit a mid life crises really at age 41, summer of 2014.
Got knocked off my bike (not serious accident) in Feb 14 which put me off road cycling for a bit.
Was looking for a way to exercise with something to aim at (weekly miles, PB's, social side) and also to clear the head in a way that fitted in with work/family.
Running fitted the bill, so got myself hooked
