Hypothetical question; how much improvement could Mondo squeeze out from his time yesterday with dedicated sprint training? My rough guess would have said he could find somewhere in the region of 0.2-0.3 maybe? But still would hit his head on a performance ceiling around 10.1 or thereabouts and maybe make the European Champs final, but nothing better than that. |

He already said he trains like a sprinter, I'm not sure there's much to squeeze out but could be wrong.

This a quote from the article I posted yesterday. "The only way to be fast and to run fast is to run fast. You have to train fast. You have to do sprint training while you’re running with high intensity. That’s the only way to get faster. You have to be running with a lot of speed a lot. I do a lot of sprint training. I train like how a sprinter would train with a little more gymnastics, pole vault-specific exercises mixed in between it. For the most part, I try to train like a sprinter and the focal point of that training is speed and trying to get as fast as I possibly can. Because I know that directly translates to higher jumps and more energy through the takeoff and on the runway." So my thinking is any improvements for Duplantis would be based around technical aspects of 100m racing rather than the training aspect. Maybe there's some speed endurance work that he's missing though (he looked fine relative to Warholm yesterday). I wouldn't be surprised if he does better work for the 100m than Warholm and other one lap sprinters/ hurdlers. |

I’m sure he’s much better trained as a sprinter. That’s what his main job is, sprinting with a pole.

There must be some specialist technical stuff around the various phases of racing 100m that he could develop, or physical development options that lose some of the things that benefit him as a PV competitor and gain some things that are beneficial for sprinters. Agree with the speed endurance thing. There's a difference between being able to sprint up to top speed on a runway for 45m vs maintaining that over 100m. I suppose the counter point would be - if he, as a perfectly conditioned PV athlete, is as optimally trained to sprint 100m as an elite 100m sprinter, then why don't sprinters train like pole vaulters? If those things are only worth 0.1s, it would surprise me. But maybe he is already at or incredibly close to his 100m sprint ceiling. |

He is literally quoted as saying he trained like a sprinter, in the post above.

(Though I presume he has no need of practicing some details like a blocks start)

He actually said he does block work in the article that the quote is from as well so he's properly doing sprint work Here's the article again: citiusmag.com The question would be how much time is specific pole vault training (so only applicable to PV) and what could be done with that time that would help him sprinting wise. It would be an interesting question to ask Duplantis himself. |

It was clear that the guy whose job it is to run fast would win over 100m
