I guess you have a similar thing in Rugby where scrum halves were always small and then Mike Phillips came along and was 6’3”. Similarly Lomu was a giant on the wing

I guess if you like basketball and are small, you get drawn towards certain positions. Maybe it is like Cricket where wicket keepers are usually quite short?

Never officially looked this up but, 5, 4, 3 are front court positions so height helps given you were traditionally expecting to play more inside in this positions. 1 and 2 more quickness required and perimeter positions so height not seen as needed and a limiter on quickness I guess. Obviously the game is more perimeter based and many tall players are quick now.

[while we’re having a hoops break, according to the Seattle Times, more people in Washington support the Supersonics than the Trailblazers even though the Supersonics don’t actually exist]

NDW would be interesting to see current stats. If you'd asked me to come up heights for each position, I'd have come up with pretty much those numbers from based on that time frame (I'd have had an inch extra on 4 and 5).

actually given the .z on the heights, it's pretty much bang on what I'd have said.

(links looks like it might not work)

Variation is much smaller by average - about 3 inches between 2B (5.11 / 190lb) vs 1B (6.2.5 / 225lb) Bigger range though I suspect

Looks like I’ve got the same problem - but yes, second base is the little guy.
