Lea looks like just you and me have got this race in our race portfolios this year.

How's your training gone, are you feeling ready for 2 weeks time ?

I had a bit of a problem in the run up to the D33 which caused a bad run, but since then things have gone pretty well, with a 32, a couple of hilly 24s, and a few around 20. Final long run of 19 today. As always feel I could have done more, but all in all reasonably happy with volume of training.

Have you done anything this length before ? Will be my longest so a bit unsure what time to aim for, and what pace to set off at.

Found a useful website which for various races lets you put in your anticipated finish time and it then calculates the splits and pace for each of the sections of the race, based on past runners actual times
climbers.net

A clubmate who is pretty similar to me at shorter ultras and has more experience at longer ones is also running, so may try setting off with him and see how things develop

Exciting times, hope it stays reasonably dry, the course will be in good nick at the moment (apart from the fallen tree blockages which have necessitated a couple of diversions )

You'll love Cateran Gus. Varied terrain, most of it very runnable, hill at Glenshee at end won't bother you, I'm sure. Surprising amount of tarmac, as discussed. Wonderful scenery and atmosphere. Hope weather is fine for you all.

BTW D has Covid just now and is debating if Cateran is doable for him. He probably will tho! :-) G

Hi Gus, yes was looking at this today!

Training has gone pretty well. I did a hilly 30 miler at the beginning of the month and a couple of 22/24 long runs. Last long run tomorrow - an 18 miler with a friend who has also signed up for it but is now having second doubts.

I did the G2E in October which was the same length (although 57 miles according to my Garmin). I managed that in just under 11 hours but it was along the canal path so flat as a pancake and perfect running weather. The last 5 or so miles I was walking a quarter of a mile, running three quarters though.

I've also done the Devil of the Highlands but it was a ridiculously hot day. I think i'll be about the 14 hour mark, but as long as I get round in one piece i'll be happy.

There doesn't seem to be too much detail re checkpoints or drop bags on the website, yet, from what I could see today.

Good luck guys. Have always wanted to recce parts of the route but the logistics of doing so don’t seem worth it. How have you guys done it?

Cheers HG - by D do you mean birthday boy DA, think he's the only D I know who's signed up for the race. That's a shame and slight worry, hope he shrugs it off easily and quickly.

Lea - sounds like your training has gone pretty well. I'm assuming we'll get a race briefing sent out at some point in next week or so with final details.

Cam - not recce'd any of the course this year, did do the mini- Cateran trail a few years back as a training run. There's a bus I did consider getting from Enochdhu down to Blairgowrie, and running back (about 18 miles), but never quite got round to getting myself organised to do it.

Best way to recce it would be hotels, if time and money no object. I stayed in a lovely hotel at Glenisla, yherexwould be Blairgowrie, bridge of Cally has a hotel etc 4 days 3 nights or less?

Yes DA, birthday boy. Hoping he'll be better for Cateran but I'm support crew for him at WHW and we're advising him to err on the side of resting. :-) G

Ah, such a good race! Great memories of glorious Spring sunshine on rolling Perthshire landscape from running this five times. Each time was two or three weeks after the Fling, so I never did it on fresh legs.

@Lea @Gus Have a brilliant weekend with this.

The first time I did it, this map was very helpful: amazon.co.uk

I'm hoping that between actual fixed Cateran Trail signs, additional race markings and the GPX on my watch that I don't need a physical paper map.....

Impossible to get lost. Ahem. (Yes, I took the wrong turn - actually failed to take the turn - at the farm at 30 miles? and did an extra half mile or so and had to turn back. Shizzle happens!) Have a great time everyone. One of the most beautiful round routes in the country, I'd say. Wonderful atmosphere too.

A blog of the day (sorry for baby dribblings at the start, my grandson was just a few months old!)

According to the Garmin it was only a couple hundred metres added - felt like more!! :-) G
