Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Can anyone suggest a good way of carrying gels on a marathon?

Revisiting this topic, I've just bought a pair of double layer Danfiki shorts with two side-pockets on the outer layer and a phone pocket on the inner layer.

The phone pocket can probably fit about 4 SIS gels before it gets a bit crammed/weighty on the one side. The side-pockets are not ultra-deep but may be OK for holding gels without them leaping out - I'm yet to put them properly to the test but can feed back if anyone's interested.

The shorts are £16.99 on Amazon, so I don't know what sort of quality we're looking at, but for that price I figured it was worth a shot.

And yet another update, in case anyone pops in at a later date and sees my previous recommendation. The Danfiki shorts are not great for carrying gels - they jump out of the side pockets even during a gentle jog. The inside pocket is okay for carrying a phone, but I found I needed to wrap it inside a small plastic bag, otherwise it also managed to pop out and land on the ground on one occasion (luckily I'd kept it in its protective case).

So the quest for a decent alternative to the Ron Hills continues. In the meantime, I bought a lightweight hydration backpack from Decathlon which has quite a few easily accessible pockets for gels - I might try this out in my next race, without the water bladder to add extra weight, and see if that works any better.

@Funky Chicken Ronhill still do a ladies version (tech twin distance) with the gel pockets in each leg, about £35 on Sportshoes.com. Don't know if that would be worth a look for you? To me, the cut doesn't look much different to stuff my husband wears.
Also, happystride do a range with leg pockets if you don't mind a bit of colour

I use one of these. 4 gels in the loops, more in the zip pouch.

Thanks @Elinem and @rhb for your suggestions. I used to have a gel belt/pouch, though I'm not sure what happened to it as it pre-dated the Ronhills. I'll see how I get on this weekend with the backpack (it's pretty light without the water bladder in it) but may yet follow up one of your suggestions if I feel it doesn't do the job well enough on the day.

I carry gels in my flanci pockets no problems
If I wear a hydration vest I push them into the pocket with the soft flask

In the old days I just used a bum bag!

Got something to say?

About This Thread

Hi, I'm looking for a way to carry 5 gels during a sub 3 marathon attempt. It needs to be lightweight, not bounce around, not impede my running and be easy to access them quickly without too much fumbling.

It doesn't need to carry anything else apart from the gels.

Any ideas? Thanks!
