The Penguin Modern classic edition is annoyingly printed in such a way that whole paragraphs look like they might, or might not, be in bold.
This is doubly annoying as the reviews of other books at the back use a different font and are altogether easier to read.
Then on page 58 there is what is almost certainly a typo. Unless Jordan really did get embroiled in a row at a gold tournament.

Quite. I will have one of the servants rustle up a new imprint momentarily.

Mine is a 1950s edition. Cost 2/6d.
(2 shillings and sixpence, for the younger readers).
There are some misprints, though.

I re-read TGG the when it was chosen for the book group as an alternative choice. I got more out of that than I did from my original reading when its qualities went over my head. I think its brilliance is slight and delicate, easy to miss and or forget. I do love the last paragraph, though.

It's a wonderful last paragraph. Last sentence.

Right. All done.
A soap opera populated by hideous people behaving revoltingly. Beautifully written though. Absolutely beautifully written. It's a very strong 8/10 from me, which might change to a soft 9 in time.

Now some important news: I own *two* copies of TGG in the Penguin Modern Classics edition, one from the 90s and one from about 3 years ago. I was also in a bookshop on Friday and I checked the up to date edition they had there, still Penguin. Yes, all three have that weird typeface issue where it looks bold sometimes. All three also have the 'gold' for 'golf' typo. So Penguin have been producing a facsimile crap edition for at least 20 years.
By contrast, the shop also had an Oxford World Classics edition. That didn't have any boldface oddities and it had the correct 'golf' spelling.

And contrary to my blog of the other day (summary: reading is rubbish. Books are rubbish. I CBAed to read) I have started TGG again even though I've lost count of the number of times I've read it.
