at the end of the day
Very valid point Mrs S on the cut off for the GG, i,m sure there are many folk would love to jog/walk the distance but are put off with the 22 hour ruling.

It's just weird isn't it?

Unless I'm missing something?

I think it's just the same cut-off as for the actual race?

From a first look I think all Bill is proposing is to shift the start back by 6 days and leave most of the rest of the rules the same?
Even if you hardly run a step then 22 hours is less than 3.5 miles/hour which is not an unreasonable walking pace (and you don't have to go the high road if you don't want to :-) )

But you are a fab runner Ian! I've signed up for Race to the Stones since a few of the Stoney club are doing that.

The virtual one? I assume you'll be doing the 100km?
I'm still hoping Lakes in a Day will be on in October but who knows what will be happening by then!

Yes, virtual 100k.

I hope your race goes ahead Ian, all of mine are cancelled. I think you'll have a chance since England seems to be opening up quicker.

When did we think England races esp ultras (limited numbers of entrants, can easily be spaced out, accurate timing less important etc) might start up again? :-) G

Grim Up North have changed most of their races (and they run a lot!) to be virtual until around September, and at the moment entries for their later races are frozen, suggesting they think they might be able to start putting on real races again Sept/Oct time (gov guidelines allowing of course)

Lakeland Trails are also starting to hint that some of their autumn series may be able to be run.

These are not mass participation obviously, and there's not yet any word of what sort of restrictions might be placed on runners. I have seen mention of staggered starts and dibbed timing in a couple of races which may be the norm at first

About This Thread

Maintained by
Following the cancellation of the 2020 Altra West Highland Way Race, we have decided to organise a virtual West Highland Way Race instead. The virtual events start at midnight on Thursday 11 June and allows people to run or walk 95 miles over 9.5 days, either individually, as a semi competitive 3 person relay team, or as a multi person fun relay team.

All entrants need to follow government guidelines for the period of the virtual race. Like all virtual events it relies on honesty from everyone, just getting out there, logging some miles as accurately as possible, and having some fun too.

Unlike the traditional event we are actively discouraging anyone from covering the 95 miles in one go. Instead you can run segments of your choosing, reaching the 3 checkpoint cutoffs, and then uploading your details to an online platform run by SI Entries.

Checkpoints are at:

Inversnaid - Leg 1: 36 miles to be completed by midnight on Monday 15 June;

Victoria Bridge, by Loch Tulla - Leg 2: a further 27 miles to be completed by midnight on Thursday 18 June;

Fort William - Leg 3: a further 32 miles giving a total of 95 miles to be completed by midday on Sunday 21 June.

Each runner or team needs to decide on a strategy according to their own ambitions and available time. Run and enjoy long single stages or break it down in to smaller (and possibly faster) stages - your imagination is your only guide.

On the evening of Saturday 20 June from 7pm to 8.30pm there will also be a show hosted by John Kynaston and Ian Beattie on the race Facebook page. They will chat with previous race winners and characters from earlier West Highland Way Races, along with a quiz.

More details, including a link to the entry page on SI Entries, can be found on the race website westhighlandwayrace.org
