Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Notes & Comments

This was never part of the portfolio for this year - but with Sylvia pulling out through injury, and us coming home from holiday a day early due to other reasons, I took the opportunity to buy her place from her and support Mel through her first 100km race.

It was good having some time off beforehand, meaning I was fairly well rested - although doing Go Ape in Thetford Forest late of Friday afternoon wasn't necessarily the best prep.
The race itself went fairly smoothly. Very hot and humid for much of it, a bit of rain just after the start, and a couple of very violent storms - with some huge hail stones thrown in for good measure.
Course was very well marked, but the going underfoot was quite tricky in places, e.g. with very rutted tracks, or lots of tree routes - which slowed us down a bit. After the storms there was also some flooding with turned the track into an ankle deep stream.
Mel was perhaps a bit conservative with the pace in the first half, but did some great powerwalking in the second.
Feet particularly were getting sore towards the end (running in fairly worn out shoes didn't help, and wet socks with bits of grit in them) but felt there was plenty left, which bodes reasonably well for three weeks time.

I saw some of the storm pictures on twitter - the hail was quite something! Sounds like the perecft build up to NDW - and how lucky is Mel to have you step in to Sylvie's shoes like that :) She did fab - have seen her split on strava v impressed! I may have hit the register interest button for next year

It would be a good event for you to do - very clear course markings (including extra 'you're going the wrong way' markings), lots of medical support (blister clinics at each 'pit stop') and a fairly busy field (there were very few moments when I couldn't spot another runner). Biggest challenge probably the getting there and getting back.
