Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

smash Woke up feeling good and ready. The extra hour really helped. Sam drove to Blaenafon, found the start and everything really easily, even the usual queue for the loo was brightened by queueing in the back of the bar - strangely not tempting at 9am on a sunday!
We were set off by the mayor and the first few miles were damp but downhill. Really downhill. To the point of being easy. So for five miles I let me legs carry me down the mountain to Pontypool. Put the iPod on at 5M, as it was starting to get tough and I needed the inspiration. I'm not a fan of music in races normally, but I knew I'd struggle towards the end so caved in. And it wasn't busy. Anyway, around 6M there was a nasty uphill, and from there I'd say the course was undulating, but with more down undulates than up. At 8M I realised that I had just under 50min to run the last 5 and get in under 2hrs. So I started on the little targets - get to ten miles in 1:30. Get to 11M in 1:40. And so on. The last 2 miles were very painful, my hip was hurting loads and I had a blister on my little toe. But I was overtaking people, which never normally happens in the second half of a race, and I was so determined not to stop running, as I knew that my hip would seize up and I'd be unable to walk, let alone run. So I kept it up, and somehow kept the miles under 9:30. Came into Cwmbran stadium with 4 mins to do the last 500m, which I knew I could do crawling, so I battled the cramping calves on the springy track, and came home in a time of about 1:58:47. Well chuffed. Had a bit of a stretch out but not nearly enough, half a banananana and then hobbled over to get my medal and (enormous) t-shirt from the mayor. Now all i have to do is replicate that on a course that's not a ski run!

WildeRover Wet and windy and bloomin fast. Thanks Welsh Poppy for the company, would never have got a time like that without you.

(Still would love to run the first 10K as a race or time trial - just to see how quick I could got. Was well inside my 10K PB at that point.)
