Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

BlueWombat MY guess is that this will be hot and slow?

Hey, spot on! I had a terrible run today, because of the weather. I think I can understand some of what Paula went through in Athens now.

It was nice to be able to get out of bed an hour before the race, have breakfast and cycle to the start to get there on time (just). But it was hot and drizzling. 29oC today here in Tainan, and with the drizzle it was like running in a steam room, or at least a sauna. I thought I was coping ok until just after the half way point, when I started to feel really strange and just too hot. I kept going, pouring basins of water over myself at each water station, which gave temporary respite each time. Running on the road was noticeably hotter than running on the white-stoned pavements. But by mile 19 I was feeling so bad that I decided I should start walking rather than risk a medical emergency. Got back into some sort of shape after a couple of miles and interspersed walking and jogging to the finish, which I reached in a PW time of 4:45:05. My heart rate was in the high 170's around 13 miles I think, and even in the second mile of walking, when I was doing 15 minute miles, it had only dropped to 136. Later miles of around 12 m/m were pushing my heart at around 155 bpm. I guess my body just couldn't move at a reasonable speed and disipate enough heat at the same time. Looking forward to a return to more temperate lattitudes, and a pleasanter Halstead (Essex) marathon in May.
