caramel This was my time last year. Wanted to get near 03:30 but injury has upset the training plan.

From 18m onwards was no fun.

Race report

9th place in just under 3.15 as a training run at the Neolithic Marathon today. Let myself off the leash for the last 12kms or so and picked off a few of lads who were slowing down.

All in all a solid day and little to zero effect on my body not bad having covered 128 miles in the last 8 days. I used no gels walked hills if my Hr went too high and drank 500mls of lucozade and 2 cups of water.

Yellow Fang This is a race I've wanted to do for several years, but it has always clashed. I nearly didn't do this year because I was put off by the sponsorship form, and then I thought I had left it too late. RachE persuaded me I hadn't, so I entered. RachE & Gobi kindly put me up the night before and we drove down to Stonehenge, where me and Gobi got a coach to Avebury. RachE was running the half. It was quite overcast before the race and it looked like rain. We eventually started. I've had some bad races recently, culminating in pulling out of the London Marathon at sixteen miles with a burst blister. My main aim today was to complete without hurting my feet too much. I put compedes on all my problem areas and, along with my Happy Monoskin socks, they worked a treat. I set off slower than I ever have done in a race. Gobi disappeared after a mile or two. The race was mostly fire-roads and grassy tracks. There were one or two busy roads, but they were policed well. I was surprised to have to run over a railway track. We were passing the Sarsen Trail walkers quite regularly. At the steep winding road, I decided I was fed up with being passed all the time and started to put in a bit more power. I was delighted to see the 12-mile-to-go marker because I was still feeling good and was confident I could make it. I waved to Rosemary, my fellow Reading Roadrunner, who was walking the Sarsen trail. I kept up the pace for the next five miles, feeling pretty good. Then we turned right straight into a stiff headwind on a drag that went on and on for about two miles. I was starting to suffer. I was delighted to see the 4-mile-to-go marker, thinking only 40 minutes max. I was even more delighted when the next marker I saw was two miles, but what a two miles! Others suffered more though, and I eventually finished about 24th. I was quite pleased with that, although a little disappointed not to dip under 3:30. I was told by RachE, that she had won the half outright :-0 and with a PB! Gobi finished in around 3:15; not bad after a 100 mile week. It was a well organised race with plentiful water stations and friendly marshals. I was slightly amused by how posh they were. The cakes were good, though I wasn't too keen on the cold pizza. Good medal. It turned out quite sunny again. The race starter had joked about the need for sun-block, but now I find I have vest-shaped sunburn.
