RFJ Well this is the first race I have completed out of the last 3....... and it feels good to be back. The day started early as RFJ jnr was in the first race, it was his debut in the Hants XC lge and at U13 level, so was lower age for this group. He had a good strong run over the 3K course in 12:24 coming in 43rd, one very proud dad, also his lap was faster than any of my 3......... So down to my race... a good warm up, new spike and a plan of just going out and seeing what and where I was, so started at the back, and I mean right at the back, the plan was to take the first lap easy, this wasnt too hard as the first hill we come to has a sharp S bend that is single file, so we all crowd and bunch up, then up the hill, at this point im in 9th for the club out of 10 up the first hill.... this stays the same throughout the first lap as I find myself, do the first lap in 14:02 (3K). The second lap and I start to open up a little and start passing other runners, including 2 of our U20s, which I was very happy about, was just hoping that I could now keep them behind me, next target, was a good mate from club and we had some good battles last year, this was to be no exception. I started to close on him during the second lap, and pulled up alongside him, that was a mistake as he put his foot down and opened up a gap of 10m. Struggled to close that down as came to the end of the lap, but am still passing a few other runners without being overtaken myself. Complete the second lap in 13:30 (3K), to much cheering from RFJ jnr who is being a star. Onto the 3rd and final lap, feel ok and so start to apply the pace a bit more after the big hill, mate is still 10m in front and maintaining it.... as we come to the barrier (can either run around or duck) we were closeing on a small group, all of which run round the barrier, (an S type move that really slows you down - ducking is, my prefered option as is 4 ft high), choose to duck again and this pulls me level with mate, 1/2 a lap to go, pull ahead, only to be taken again by him at the incline, and pulls out 5m on me, still we are taking others in our battle.... on to the last down hill, then is 300m to the finish on the flat..... I use the hill to sit in behind, then spring of the final bend for a long sprint, took mate straight away, then had to hold on for dear life to the finish line as he responded...... made it, 3rd lap 13:05 (3K). Final time 40:37, a bit slower than last year, but a better position by 2 places (214 to 216). So very happy over all, 6th for the club out of 10.
