Bodge What a perfect day for running.
Following a full runners breakfast I set off to the race, with blue skies and a light wind forecast this was going to be a good race. Met up with members from my local running club, I had decided to run in my new black long sleeve fetch top and fore go the club vest. Think I managed to get my mug shot in the local paper so its off to the newsagent on Monday for a copy of the local express and star to check it out.
Well we off on the dot 11:30 and the climbing began with the first half mile being straight up hill, only to lose it all and run straight down into the next valley. Up the valley and over the first piece of water and a further steady climb up to check point 1, no hanging around though as you are clocked straight away. at last I can start to get settled and a steady pace. As I made my way to the next check point people had different opinions on which was the best route, which saw runners going off in all directions. Just before 5 miles managed to swallow a powerbar gel a bit thick but it did stay down. Check point 2 reached in 49:10 just under what I had planned but there was still the biggest climb to come. So it was check point three here I come, Castle Ring here I come and the highest point on the course. It was here as I crossed the road I started to meet some of the leaders heading to CP 4, so down to the valley and the start of the steepest climb, half way up the old lungs were at bursting point and but I knew if I could reach the top in under 1hr 15 I was still on schedule. Did it and boy what a view, but no time to waste I too now had the pleasure of the down hill run.
It was half way down I saw another Fetch shirt coming up the hill, I cheered you on, not sure who you were sorry but you managed a smile.
The next section saw the run turn on to the road for half a mile and even though we were climbing it seemed so much easier running on tarmac than the rough trails. CP4 in my sights and some fellow club mates, so a bit of a spurt on and a chance to chat. CP4 done and only one real hill left (Kit Bag Hill) so it was off to CP5 and all down hill, it was also a chance to try another gel this time it was a blackcurrant SIS one. 10 miles covered 1hr 41mins feeling good and only just over 5 miles to go. CP5 done and across the railway lines just beat the train and started climbing Kit Bag hill. Why when you reach the top do the legs turn to jelly!!!!
Took a while to get going and felt as if I lost a bit of time Garmin lost its signal for a bit too??
I'm afraid to say this was the boring a bit of the run I had been dreading as it was just over a mile of running on road, but it did end and I was back on the chase and heading for home with only 3 miles to go and the last check point before the finish to negotiate. I had also now started to pick off some other runners and could see two more in the distance so it was down a gear and a case of picking the pace up. Just as I approached CP 6 the first of the two guys I had been chasing was passed but he wasn't having it and our own little race began with the last mile and a bit to go. With just over half a mile to go the next guy was passed as he took a wrong turn, but I wasn't telling a place is a place and I still had the other chap hard on my heals. As we headed down the last hill I knew could hold them both off. as we approached the last turn and the with the finish in sight it was elbows out and make your self as wide as possible and with a steady climb up the last 200 meters to the finish I did it not only did I manage to hold the two guys off I came home under the 2hrs 40 mins mark. Well pleased with that.
For all you Fetch runners living in the Local Area I can recommend this and I will be back next year....

Killerkane 15miles around the chase with a map and compass. You may never hear from me again! Update - This race is only supposed to be 15 miles but i had a few errrrr topologically challenging moments so to speak. My polar clocked the distance i ran at 17.1 miles but it is usually just under / slightly low. I was hoping for sub 3 hr and if i hadn't gone wondering for 2.1 miles i would have easily achieved this. My heart/lungs were fine all the way round but my legs just didnt have it in them after about two thirds. I set off steady trying to pace myself and then just keep going. I managed last place :) The multiterrain and 1500 feet of climbing took their toll - next year i will be more prepared ! Scenery great, and much fun although i might not say that tomorrow! Saw another fetchite !!! You know who you are son ;)
