Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

BlueWombat O.K., I'll lay it on the line: I'm going for a Boston Qualifier here. It could all go horribly wrong, but I'm putting all I can into this attempt. Worth a bet?

UPDATE: time was 4 seconds slower than my PB in Chicago in October (certainly a hillier course than Chicago). Sorry folks. Report to follow.

O.K., before they get overwritten by more immediate concerns, here's the download of my memories from Sunday's California International Marathon ...

This is a point to point race, with a 7am start at Folsom, a town to the east of Sacramento. The buses were scheduled to leave my hotel around 5am. I woke at 1am, then at 3am, then tried to doze (unsuccessfully) 'til 4am, then gave up on remaining horizontal and prepared my porridge, coffee, filled bottle with poweraid, got dressed in race gear, applied bodyglide, discovered bodyglide had run out, cursed not buying some new and cheap at the expo the day before. Looked out of window and noticed people were getting on bus already, realised I might miss it. Hurried up and arranged late checkout with front desk pronto. Off to bus. The buses were local yellow school buses. Plenty of room for legs provided you were average size for a 6th grader. I ended up sitting next to a guy from Mammoth Lakes, who runs in the same club as Deana Kastor, and we had a good chat about everything from cross country skiiing to the Phillipines education system on the long dark journey out of town. Arrived at Folsom dam and got some coffee from the local filling station while 4000 or so runners congregated at the start.

Five minutes to go, and the star spangled banner was sung out by two little girls (aged around 5 and 6) of one of the organisers. Despite 1776 and all that, it almost brought a tear to my eye. The local mayor had come along too, along with tv crews etc., and waived us good speed. I chucked my sweats in the waiting bus and tried to edge my way through the throng towards the pacer with the 3:30 placard. I was a way off him when the race started, and tried to get closer during the first, mainly downhill, mile. In retrospect, I think I shouldn't have bothered too much. As it was I overtook him before I knew it and just kept going. Here are some splits:

1 7:36
2 7:44
3 7:45

It was cool. I had discarded a t-shirt and was running in singlet and shorts, but with gloves and hat. Strangely discovered that I got colder when I removed gloves. It's the first time I've noticed how keeping extremities warm can be so helpful.

4 7:52
5 7:53
6 8:00

Feeling good. The organisation at this marathon is great, with people at each mile post shouting out the average pace that you are running at as you go past
