I'm much happier since I stopped reading newspapers. I think some papers need reminding that there is a difference between "in the public interest" and "of interest to the public".

As long as they still sell plenty I don't think any of the papers care.

Nellers is spot on. As always, I don't blame the media. I blame the people that create the market to which they sell their product. If we just ignored the hell out of it they'd have to find something we would consume.

I don't think Schofield had much choice, it's not him singling himself out as different but society. Like Gareth Thomas, he had to control the narrative. Get in 1st and stop the papers smearing him. If he hadn't then they could have run the home wrecker angle. Etc.
As for the power of the press, you only have to look at the language used in Brexit, and the manipulation of lies to see how much power they wield.
I'm with JK, things have improved. Very fast in fact. But, they have also taken some steps back since 2016.
Talking to less tolerant colleagues they say it's because they now feel they can say what they want to. Not the 'political correctness gone mad...' the homophobia was there, just under the surface. Go to the big pride events and there are groups there informing us that we are an abomination.
Great Yarmouth held it's first gay pride last summer. The comments on the local papers facebook site were absolutely shocking.
If I see two guys holding hands here (small town Norfolk) my initial response is still 'ohh that's brave'

Same in Lincoln 1step. Whenever the local pride comes around the local Facebook page goes into overdrive with the usual numbskulls.

I have written that post so many times! I’ve just come off it now, some may say it’s defeatist but it was futile, nobody wanted educating from their entrenched views and it was only making me very angry. I love the amount of people (it’s almost always men) who ask when straight pride is, I always respond by saying it’s when they organise it. There is still a huge amount of people who feel they are being somewhat victimised through pride and just can’t understand why ‘they’ aren’t be celebrated, even though they have never been persecuted.
And the homeless line is always trotted out by someone who does absolutely nothing to help the homeless.
