Deliberately trying to encourage some discussion beyond my 1/12 scale GT cars and my 1/10th scale off road buggy racing...
Did anyone watch The Great Model Railway Challenge on Channel 5 and if so, what did you think?
I thought the 3 teams battling it out format could have worked quite well, but didn't like the aggressiveness of the judging. It's only a bit of fun, for goodness sake. And I'd have like to have seen more detail about how they did the build (more like Scrapheap Challenge).
And what about Battle of Britain Model Squadron on C4. I only saw the first of those, but it was brilliant, I thought. And properly respectful of the real sacrifices of the young men and women involved in the real war, of course. But the wee rubber band activated plasticine bombs were fab! G

No one going to out themselves?! Planes, trains or automobiles (or boats or anything radio controlled modelling)! G

Lol! Yeah, seems I'm in a minority of 1 (or maybe 2 or 3 including Nick and Claypole?!)
I watched part 2 of Model Squadron last night. Still got one episode to watch. I'd like to see more of the actual model making and flying detail. But the scenes of dozens of planes in sky and how closely it relates to the history (real inexperience, chaos and danger, as well as the undoubted heroism) is great.
Going to catch up on Railway Model Challenge on 5 on demand too.
Bet you had a train set though Andy. You're just not prepared to admit it! G

Yay - WW as well. Hiya. What are you into - cars, planes, trains, boats?
I should probably include drones too, because they are RC. But they aren't "modelled" on anything. And they are almost autonomous, rather than human controlled! Though the sport of drone racing is pretty full on! G

Resurrection of a hobby I could never afford as a hobby HG. Meccano and Mamod.
A little more sedate than RC racing.

Ooh, Meccano, v. cool. It was what the "proper engineer" kids did, instead of lego, I always thought. I had some slightly more technical plastic in Fischer Technik (don't know if anyone's heard of that). It had quite sophisticated electrical parts - motors with worm gears, light detectors etc. for building sort of production line, semi automated type things.
Is it always static stuff you build? Is that Eiffel tower a kit or did you design and build yourself?
I'll have to google Mamod though. Not heard of that one. G

Mamod - steam engines. Yes, I remember them. Beautiful little bits of engineering. Again, do you build from kit or design and build from scratch or modified bits? G

All my Meccano is kit form at the moment. It's taken me 52 years to have enough money for a Mamod and have a couple old boilers picked up from ebay.
Now I don't seem to have the time!
Mamod and Meccano both have very interesting historical backgrounds. As does Matchbox. The three M's.
