Wonderful birds, bee-eaters! They were one of the colourful and interesting birds in the bird book I had when I was a boy, which I always dreamed of seeing. A few years ago I was wandering around the impressive Greek ruins of Selinunte in Sicily when a little group came flying by. I was beside myself with excitement! It had been a long wait. Since then I've seen quite a few of them in northern Greece, but they still seem wonderful and exotic.

The roller remains the last of those magical birds from my childhood, as yet unseen. I actually believe I heard one in Romania a couple of years ago, but didn't see it. One day!

Two of the most exciting sightings for me were red breasted merganser (in the Solent) and hoopoe (in Egypt, by the Nile). Both birds I'd wanted to see for decades nerd I've not seen bee-eaters :(

I have a thing about waders (birds, not boots!) and some of them have been exciting, in particular whimbrels on our honeymoon in the Seychelles heart

Thanks Chrisity - I remember these pictures at the time but was too busy with work to get out there.

I've seen hoopoes a couple of times abroad. However this year I've been learning more about songs and identification and now have a soft spot for the little brown efforts that I didn't pay attention to before.

never seen a Hoopoe or a Roller or a BeeEater....seen some really bright things in Canada but not here in the UK.
little brown efforts have always been my thing --voice and identification wise. Pipits (Richards and Tawny etc) and warblers....
But some colour is always good. Now, I haven't seen a Kingfisher for months.

I've seen cardinals a couple of times, including on the way to the Boston Marathon start line. They are bright.

I saw the nesting bee eaters in Cumbria last year! There's one currently hanging around somewhere up the Northumberland coast at the moment, I think.
