I don't think I've heard any other versions of it Steve, could be wrong though. It's fabulous isn't it? I understand it has been used as a part of a couple of movie soundtracks, that might explain it being known to a wider audience. Definitely a favourite of the rare soul/crossover crowd.
Cornelius Bros version played on 6Music recently too.
Love the Sandi Sheldon one too, despite the grammatical error on the label; haven't heard it for a while.
Millie Jackson's "My Man, A Sweet Man" I discovered when Radio 1 asked Paul Weller to play 10 of his fave tracks and talk about why he loved them. I discovered a load more Northern Soul tracks because of him and the Jam. I went out and bought "My Man" the next day and some of the other tracks/artists he selected inc Chairman of the Board - 2 albums. PW was a massive influence on my music taste, esp retrospective stuff.
RS, I'm glad you like Millie Jackson - she is a true soul goddess. Ady Croasdell [of Kent compilations fame] did a terrific compilation of Spring recordings and several of her best are on that. Her classic NS track is "House for Sale", a record that never fails to make me feel sad.
My personal fave of Millie's is her cover of Luther Ingram's "If Loving You is Wrong", it's soulful and heartfelt and just fantastic, please give it a try. Both versions are here:
Been digging deep into my archives today and came up with a few gems. Anyone heard much from Towana & The Total Destruction? DT may remember "Wear Your Natural Baby" from a compilation I did for him. Here's a really nice track:
I thought I might indulge of my "other" passion for your entertainment
Feel free to post, but please do try and keep it soulful. No funk or ska please! I maintain an off-line list of all the tracks posted, if you would like a copy please feel free to fmail me.
