why in all that is sensible would he specify the exact time in advance?

1940 - John Sigmund begins swimming for 89 hours, 46 minutes in the Mississippi river

He swam 292 miles after setting out to beat the world distance swimming record which stood previously at 288 miles. This was set in the faster-flowing Yellowstone River.
