I read Ursula Le Guins earthsea trilogy as a teen and loved it: that led me to the dispossessed probably the last dystopian / utopian sci-fi book I've really loved. The Handmaids tale I found a bit pompous and i am generally wary of the apocalyptic and new world. Which is a lot of preamble to say I have it a 7 because I liked the word play and the idea but it was generally all too walking dead for me to want to reread and I had to canter through the last 30 pages because I was a bit bored. Didn't hate it though!

If you like that kind of thing - which I do and I suspect Maccers-Gooers and others emphatically do not - Earthsea can cause purrings of delight in the manner of a warm bath.

"As long ago as forever and as far away as Selidor, there lived the dragonlord and Archmage, Sparrowhawk, the greatest of the great wizards - he who, when still a youth, met with the evil shadow-beast; he who later brought back the Ring of Erreth-Akbe from the Tombs of Atuan; and he who, as an old man, rode the mighty dragon Kalessin back from the land of the dead. And then, the legends say, Sparrowhawk entered his boat, Lookfar, turned his back on land, and without wind or sail or oar moved westward over the sea and out of sight".

High fantasy done properly. Lovely.

Ahem, here is my first ten years of Book For Each Year of Your Life
1962 - John Le Carre - A Murder of Quality
1963 - Spike Milligan - Puckoon
1964 - Simone de Beauvoir - A Very Easy Death
1965 - Graham Greene - The Comedians
1966 - Jacqueline Susann - The Valley of the Dolls
1967 - Nell Dunn - Poor Cow
1968 - Gore Vidal - Myra Breckinridge
1969 - Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse Five
1970 - Susan Hill - I'm The King Of The Castle
1971 - Ursula K Le Guin - The Lathe of Heaven

You will note that 1971 contains just such piffle. Never let it be said that I pre-judge such rubbish. I'm always willing to give it at least half a paragraph before writing it off as the garbage it obviously is.

Puckoon. Nothing like as funny now as it was when I was a pre-teen.

Your open-mindedness is an inspiration to us all, Skipper.

That's next to read as I finished Nod this morning. Review to follow, once I've gathered my thoughts.

Ah I remember him finally meeting his shadow and the 'I am Ged' thing. It's a storyline that's been done many times but it was the first time I'd encountered it. I'm not sure I've ever read the lathe of heaven so will await mcg scathing review with interest. I'll see if station 11 is in the library ta
