Several of you have noticed that I dropped the Amazon link from our footer a few months back. This is because they contacted me to say that I had violated their rules. As far as I can see, this came down to the wording I was using alongside the link.
Anyway... I've had a chance to have a good read through their affiliates programme docs, and have lifted their suggested text verbatim - so I've reinstated it in the footer. With any luck, it will be ok from here on - but if it disappears again, you know they took umbridge at something.
And just in time for all those lovely Christmas presents you'll undoubtedly buy me too

The first nets session happened last night
Despite having 23 people in the Facebook Messenger group, there were precisely four of us in attendance. But even that was a bit of a relief, as there was a point when I wondered if anyone at all would come
Ideally, we need to get about 10 people each week to make it economically viable - but the folks who did turn up were keen, and decent too. I don't think any of us were head and shoulders better or worse than the others - so we were a decent match up.
Amongst those that didn't make it, there were several who ran into last minute hitches, and some who seem to have stopped responding to messages. But there were also a few that were genuinely disappointed to have missed out - so I'm optimistic.
The session itself was good. After a few loose deliveries, I had a purple patch of about 15-20 minutes where my bowling was really fizzing. I am still having pleasant flashbacks of a ball that pitched on leg and hit the off stump But I'm blaming fatigue and a lack of practice for the rest of the time, when my bowling was quite erratic. Mostly over-pitching and erring towards the leg side. The batsmen were very kind about it though.
My turn to bat was good. The bat felt like a plank for the first couple of balls, but then I found a bit of sweetness. I love running, but for me there is *nothing* in sport quite like getting hold of a half volley with a full swing of the bat. It feels like the whole world is singing.
I managed to twinge my neck a bit whilst batting. I'm not sure how, although by necessity there's a lot of sudden movement - and I have to accept that I'm not 13 any more. Of all the ways I could have damaged myself, that was furthest from my mind. Last night I really struggled to get to sleep because of the pain, and I can't really turn my head to the right without my shoulders coming too. I've just given the back of my left shoulder a going over with a tennis ball against the wall - and that seems to have eased it a bit. I think it'll ease off over the next couple of days.
I remember the first nets of the new season (which usually didn't happen until Feb / March time) always came with about two days of DOMS. Aside from this very specific neck twinge, and a bit of an ache in my top hand from gripping the bat, that all seems well under control - so I guess 15 years of running does have its fitness advantages.
Pip pip!

Well done, sounds positive. Always have to remember that any long period of pretty intense, new activity is quite a lot. With running, we'd say jog/walk, start with 20 mins, take rests, build up. Warm up before, stretch after. Bet you didn't do any of that? Straight in to 1 hour of intense bowling and batting, perchance?! Do as I say, not as I do etc?! No, it's not a new betting game, and I'm not Ray Winstone. You mugs.
A while back, Sigh asked whether there could be some sort of rolling 365 day total graph. He put it in as a feature request:
fetcheveryone.com/featurerequests.php#feature271
It got 83 votes for, and no votes against, pushing it to the top of a list of 332 features that you lot have requested.
If you go to the Train page:
fetcheveryone.com/training-home.php
you'll see a new summary bar. Some of the totals in that bar have just been yanked up from further down the page. You can click 'Run' on the left, and it'll page through your biking and swimming figures too.
The totals are also clickable - so if you click your September mileage, it'll take you to your training log. If you click your September ranking, it'll take you to the mileage league. And if you click the 365 figure, it will take you to what is currently a pretty straightforward graph that shows how your 365 day total has gone up and down over the course of your running career as logged on Fetch.
It's not perfect yet, but it's a starting point, with some interesting peaks and troughs.
I am really loving the feature request system. It highlights the ever-changing nature of the site; it hopefully gives you all an insight to the sort of requests that were coming my way via the feedback link; and it really helps me to see which ideas sink or swim.
And so this blog is also here to highlight the feature request system. I've added some little tools to that as well in recent weeks. You can sort by score, to see which features are most popular; or you can bung in a keyword to find all the features that mention that word. Have a look: fetcheveryone.com/featurerequests.php
PS in case you haven't seen, all paid-for shirts and vests have now been posted. There are some nice pics in the gallery from the folks who've received them already - I love seeing the pics! If you missed out, there are some spares in the most popular sizes. I'll wait until next week before making those available, just in case there are any problems with the ones we've sent out. Toot!
PPS if you're watching the RWC, listen out for the half time gong. It made me smile.
P^3S my right calf is not right. My left achilles is still not happy, but at least it's getting some rest. And my right shoulder is also not happy. There's a bit of DOMS in there after yesterday, inevitably - but it's been a bit icky since playing catch in the swimming pool on holiday at the start of August. Luckily I know a good physio

I think I've found the problem. The database table storing daily totals had a few entries with a date of 0000-00-00. When the server builds the graph, it was creating a column for every day (about 0.75 million days) since we switched from BC to AD. That seems to be the current term for bad bowling. And I bowled plenty of filth today.
The amazing people at Long Eaton Post Office bought me a spare half hour today. I turned up with 76 Fetch anniversary shirts to post. In every other PO I've visited, they make you stand there whilst they print off the labels for each one, sometimes getting you to weigh a dozen before they finally believe you that they're all between 100 and 250 grams.
But the awesome lady at LEPO helped me count them up, worked out what the final bill was, and charged my card. I will pop in tomorrow to pick up the receipts. Rather than standing there for at least half an hour, I was free.
With my half hour slot before picking up the boy reclaimed, I headed to West Park with a few cricket balls to do some practice bowling in the nets. Our indoor nets are officially starting on Tuesday, so I wanted to see how embarrassingly bad my bowling would be.
I did this exercise last Friday, in drizzle, with a plastic ball - and it was pretty bad. But I also wasn't sure about the crease marks on the matting. I had a tape measure with me, and discovered that the marked crease was at about 15 metres, not the regulation 20.XX metres.
I also had a pen and paper - so I made myself a little chart, and rumbled through ten overs. I just wanted some sort of benchmark, and to find out what *sort* of wrong my bowling is. So I didn't try to do anything special with my action, I just tried to bowl line and length.
The columns represent each ball of the over, and each row is an over:
^ = overpitched
double ^ = extremely overpitched
V = a bit too short
double V = extremely short
< = a bit wide on the offside
<< = way too wide on the offside
> = a bit wide on the legside
>> = way too wide on the legside
. = happy with that
X = OMG.
In 60 balls, I managed 16 that I was happy with. There was one OMG, when the ball flipped out of my hand and went straight to midoff - but my shoulder and bowling hand were getting pretty tired in that last over.
31 of the 60 balls went down the leg side. 14 of those were within hitting range for the batsman, but 17 (>>) went into the side netting. I dragged a couple a bit short, and five were extremely short. Two were overpitched.
So even though I only managed 16 balls that I was happy with, there does at least appear to be some consistency in the bad balls. Something is happening that is sending my deliveries down the leg side - and if I can work out what that is, perhaps I can improve my scores next time.
I will charge up the GoPro, and try to get some footage of my bowling action. I'm really curious to see it - I've never seen a video of myself doing any sort of cricket before. My bowling action is some sort of Edmonds / Emburey hybrid wannabe, having spent my formative cricketing years watching them in England's 1985 Ashes team. At least, that's what it is in my head.
It was also amusingly annoying that there's a great big apple tree right next to the net. Can you spot the cricket ball in this picture?

Well done on the time saving and practise - and now looking forward to a new shirt any day now.um
How long is your run up?
If 'long' try bowling off 3-4 steps - and give it a bit of spin, just because that's meant to be slow !
Once that works 80-90%, try extending the run up - if you want to be fast.
(althought the fastest bowler I ever faced used to bowl off of about 5-6 paces and the speed was all in his arm movement)
And really, try sticking something (eg one of those apples) where you want the ball to pitch. It's far easier aiming at something.4:53pm, 19th Sep 2019 -
um - it’s leg spin, and it’s quite a gentle run up. The ones that feel right seem to fizz out of my hand, whereas the bad ones just loop into the leg side netting. Really fascinated to see what my action looks like.fetcheveryone4:56pm, 19th Sep 2019

The school roof (legside) was very unforgiving - it would rarely relinquish a tennis ball. And over the wall on the offside was bad news, as it was always wild with nettles. The straight six wasn't so bad, as it was my friend's house across the road from the school. But if you went over long on it was bad news. One time I hit someones window - they took the ball and put it in a vase on their windowsill to gloat at us. Miserable buggers.fetcheveryone5:11pm, 19th Sep 2019

Having done a bit of cricket watching over the summer, I got some wistful urges to get a bat in my hands, and to see if I could finally find my bowling action again.
Everyone knows that cricket takes a long time. When I used to play weekend matches, we'd need to be there from about 1pm; the match would last until about 7pm; and then there was the "just a pint with the team" that would often turn into several. And we were a small club, so there was an expectation that you'd turn up midweek at some point to help with doing stuff like rolling the pitch, marking the lines, and sorting out the molehills in the outfield. Mid-week practice wasn't really a thing though
I got to thinking about how I could get the buzz of playing, but without the time commitment. Then I remembered indoor winter nets. Those creaking February evenings where even in my twenties I'd be walking with a groan for the next couple of days whilst my body got back into the spirit of things.
I thought about joining up with a club to attend their net sessions - but that didn't seem fair. With no urge to play weekend cricket, I'd just be taking up batting time for someone else; or apologising every time I bowled a massive looping arc into the side netting.
I've arrived at the idea of arranging my own indoor nets. I've been putting the word out on local Facebook groups, and pestering everyone in sight to get involved. So far I've managed to build a group of 21 people with varying degrees of commitment to the cause. I've dug out my cricket kit, and made Katie try it all on. And I'm nervously waiting an email back from the effervescent Mr Billington of Marston Vale Middle School, to ask how lenient he would be if we make a block booking and it all goes pear shaped.
Look, there's a pigeon.

Last week I changed the 'People' page. I thought it would largely go unnoticed. In a typical month, it gets about 0.25% of the page views that the site generates.
fetcheveryone.com/people.php
It now shows a list of all the people you follow, along with their annual training mileage, recent training, and next event. It *used* to show a list of all the people you'd buddied, along with their annual training mileage, recent training, and next event.
You can still manage your buddy list on that page - there's a link to it in the sub-menu; or look out for the link below the picture of Nellers and Fenland Flier sharing a hug
I wanted to do a little blog to explain the difference between buddying and following, to try to explain why I made the change.
Following someone means you're interested in what they do e.g. their training, their blogs, that kind of thing.
Buddying someone means you're willing to share a bit more of your info with that person.
Buddying came first, way back in the day, when users asked if they could share some of their info with a circle of trusted friends, rather than with all and sundry. It evolved a bit, so that some bits of content around the site became filterable as 'buddies only' e.g. fastest runners in 2019 - that sort of thing.
Following arrived as a thing several years later, when other users wanted to be notified if someone they liked had done some training. Lots of you had established buddy lists, so in order to avoid flooding you all with notifications of new training, I introduced the 'Follow' button on user profiles.
When Fetch began in 2004, Facebook was literally only just getting out there. Online privacy was not at the forefront of most people's thinking. Now that social interaction online is a much bigger part of our lives, it's a given that every site that offers social interaction needs to allow a surprisingly complex set of layers under which we can choose what to share.
Retrofitting all this to Fetch in a consistent way is certainly a challenge, but this page change is a step towards it. You can still use the people page in the same way, but you need to click 'Follow' on the profiles you're interested in. To make this a bit easier to achieve, there's now a "Follow all your buddies" link on the buddy list page.
What this does mean is that you'll get a notification whenever the people you follow log some training. And you might not want this. When I can get round to it, you'll be able to decide the ways in which you follow someone, to see some stuff but not all.
It's complicated, and it's a way off being how I want it. Thank you for your patience and understanding as I work towards that.

Every six months, I give a chunk of cash to the server company - and I've just done that a few minutes ago. It's the biggest single payout I make. If you've been contemplating setting up a contribution, now would be great fetcheveryone.com/invite.php
We had an operating system upgrade on (I think) May 15th, because the server was really struggling. The machine itself is quite a beast, but the old OS wasn't capable of using all of its resources. It was a bit of a tough week, with a lot of sluggishness and a bit of downtime; but since then, I've been really impressed with how well the server has performed. I can't think of any times when the site has been unavailable or slow. I hope you'll agree with that.
And not only am I grateful for the server doing well, but of course, I am very grateful to all of you who've made contributions to help cover the costs of running the site (for the record, the costs are largely "server + me"). It's been nearly three years since Fetch became independent again, and we're here today because of your support. Thank you!
It's always been my goal that the site is free to use with nothing stuck behind a paywall. That's still the case, and will continue to be so. And recently, I've seen how we can extend that to event organisers, by making sure that the events they put on are directly available to you, without any third party listing sites taking commission.
Those paywalls and commissions feel like commercial intruders on what should be the simplest and most joyous activity there is.
I want Fetch to be something that helps you to enjoy your activity. Fetch will never be a product that you buy in exchange for the promise of happiness. Your support for what we do should be the product of the happiness it delivers.
Have a lovely day,
Ian

Our Member of the Month candidates are put forward as nominations by other members of the community. You can nominate someone at any point during the month. Some of you have noticed recently that we have had an influx of listings from companies (no need to mention any names) that advertise running events. They don't organise events, they collect listings, then promote those listings, and deal with entries. Presumably they make their money by taking a proportion of the entry fee for anyone who enters via their site.
Please note that none of this has been underhand. I've even explored with an automatic import from one such provider. I've no reason to think that anyone has abused the Fetcheveryone listings. It's just someone's business model. We even discussed the possibility of Fetch getting a commission for any traffic we send.
But several thoughts have been settling into place in my head:
1) as many of you have pointed out, the listings are not always accurate. Race titles often include multiple distances, and the registered distance in the database is a bit of pot luck between those options. Sometimes they're just wrong. A lot of this is down to trying to fit together two different listing styles. I have a lot of sympathy for anyone trying to solve this problem.
2) clicking "Visit Event Website" on one of our listings feels quite jarring when, instead of going to the organisers site, you end up on a third party site. We could mitigate this with some wording changes.
3) This is the big one. If an increasing number of small events have to turn to a third-party company to generate entries, it could result in higher race entry costs, or put cost pressure on the event organiser, or both. That doesn't feel great.
The Fetch race listings have always been free to search, and free to list. In an average month, we send over 8,000 clicks through to organisers websites, and we do so without seeking to profit. Full disclosure: I do offer the option for race organisers to email opted-in Fetchies, and I charge £75 per 1000 recipients. But this is an optional extra for them to get people visiting them directly. My policy is not to do more than two of these in any calendar month - it's not a big earner.
It's my view that maintaining our own organic listings, linking everyone who visits Fetch directly to the people who organise races, is really important. Ten minutes here and there doing a bit of research on events near you, and adding them to Fetch is not just something that will help you, but will also:
1) help other Fetchies to find events;
2) help grass roots event organisers by spreading the word without paying commission;
3) help Fetch, by ensuring that our listings are well-respected.
I'm not looking to profit from our listings. I didn't set the site up to make a profit. The majority of our costs are covered through your voluntary support for what the site offers. It feels right that our community should support grass roots running, and this feels like a good way to do it.
For a bit of fun and encouragement on the way, I've made some badges for you to collect as you add listings to our database. And every event added in September (excluding parkruns - we get these automatically) will put that person into a draw to win a Fetch Buff. How does that sound?
Places you can look for events:
1) local club websites
2) FB groups
3) other places
For my part, I will be letting listing companies know that (with all due respect), we will not be importing these listings in the future. Ultimately, our own race listings will stand or fall based on the ability of our community to work together for a common goal. And given our track record, I've every reason to believe that we can be successful.
Thank you for reading!

Is that why the race listings in my local area have included quite a lot of races that aren't in my local area at all but had had the "FE" randomly whanged on to the map? Always the same offender.Raptors claws are coming to town3:28pm, 2nd Sep 2019

Fetchlad, I tend to put in the ones that I enter, or ones club mates are doing, or ones that our club organises, or even just ones at which I am supporting etc. When I am less active running (or more especially racing) I tend to update / create fewer. I will try to update / create a few more. GMerry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)4:04pm, 2nd Sep 2019

Happy - thank you - the more we can get listed, the better. Ceasing imports from these companies could account for about a quarter of our listings (but that's not to say other people would not have added them if they were missing). But it'd be good to fill that gap.4:38pm, 2nd Sep 2019 -
I completely agree with this, great move.roberton
And to be clear, I don't think it was bad in principle that race listings were automatically imported. The downsides you've listed are real and balance against the advantages of it.
So a good move and a well written blog post explaining it all5:13pm, 2nd Sep 2019 -

I think the race listings here are great. I always add the ones I organise because I'd always hope to get a few more Fetch stickers as a result. My races are about as grass roots as you can get and currently it's enter on the day so I suspect the site you refer to wouldn't find them of interest anyway but I think the approach you are taking here is spot on.BaronessBL5:55pm, 2nd Sep 2019
