Perfect conditions. Happy with my bloods, my training, the weather - just the iliopsoas concern, hoping that the lay-off will have helped. Couple of ibuprofen before the race.
Started with the front few to get ahead of the crowd up the path to the IRPP. Let them go around 2 miles but still probably worked a little too hard in the first 6-7 miles. Front 3 were out of sight before the drop down in to Chitterne. Planned on a gel from 1:00 and 30 min intervals thereafter. Energy was begininng to feel a little low from CP3 and inclines from here in really sapped me. Removed my undershirt and felt better, but pace slowed through to CP4. Really slow out of CP on to the top, and the section through to CP5 was tough - the loooong tracks and low energy was worsened by my stomach beginning to reject the idea of more gel, and some really uncomfortable sensations in both vastus medialis which were quite new. Took another ibuprofen. From CP5, I knew that it was a steady uphill for a few miles before the drop down. I knew after leaving the CP that I only had a few minutes on whoever was next as I heard the volunteers blowing whistles for the next arrival. I didn't stall at all, pain or discomfort didn't increase, and just had to press hard and not slow up any more. A glance back when leaving the IRPP showed nobody, at the bottom of the path back towards the HQ I looked again before entering the final wooded section and I saw the next guy coming down the hill. I knew I had 4th in the bag. To cross the line and only find 2 guys there and that I had 3rd place was amazing. One of the guys seemingly took a wrong turn and came in 6th - the recces and the homework were priceless.
I can't say that I enjoyed the second half of the race - it took more from me than I had imagined.
Great showing from all of the Frome crowd. A great day, great organisation and a memorable race.
