Twickenham 10k. Step one in operation 'Goodbye Six'. Course was a loop along the Thames starting at the White Swan pub in Twickenham. It crossed the river using Richmond bridge and some random footbridge up-stream.
Plan was for a conservative 6 minute opener before gradually picking up the pace, passing 5k in 18:30 and sprinting for home after about 4 miles.
Reality was that I went out at a comfortable 5:50 pace before crossing the river and hitting the sludge. Unfortunately the weather had reduced the non-tarmac towpath to pretty slippy mud. I think this damaged the next 3 miles to varying degrees before returning to the good surface and suddenly seeing my time change from 6:11 to 5:45...
I lost this impressive show-pony speed crossing back over the river on the 'random footbridge'. It was packed with people, bikes and anti-cycle obstacles (and steps). After that a solid run back through Twickenham trying to hold it together.
From the first bridge I was safely in 6th. I passed the guy ahead of me in the second mile and was starting to catch 4th after the other crossing. He then nearly went the wrong way just before 6 miles and I finished very closely behind him scooting just under 37 minutes. 5th.
Happy enough considering the terrain and my week but now feeling I can run a 5:50 pace 10k pretty soon!
