Notes & Comments

Baltimore Marathon!

First marathon. Started that the corner of the Orioles Baseball Stadium, then went through Baltimore downtown up to the Baltimore Zoo, back downtown and around the inner Harbour, back to the downtown area before heading back through the Orioles stadium to finish at the Baltimore Ravens stadium. The course was pretty challenging, with the first 5-8 miles being uphill, before flattening out for about 6 miles before going uphill again. Between mile 16 and 25 it was very hilly.

Right calf was still sore, however was ok for first3-4 miles. Started race with the 3hr 30 pace group. Stayed with them until about mile 4 while I worked out how the calf would be. Felt ok, so increased my pace. The up and down hills made the calf twinge, but managed to run through the pain. At mile 6 water stop, I slowed down to drink some water, the change in pace made my calf twinge. It was pretty painful, so stopped to try and stretch it out. Decided I would have to not dramatically change pace again if possible as that seemed to cause the calf to hurt more! Managed to get going ok and run through the pain, and it eventually eased off. Managed to catch the 3he 20 pace group about mile 10. At the half marathon point, passed all the half marathon runners waiting to start. They effectively ran the second half of the marathon, although the first 3 miles of thir race was on a parallel road. The two races merged at mile 16. The merge was handled well, with it occurring over a 1 mile section. The final hills started at mile 16 also. It was here my legs were getting tired. I lost the 3.20 pace group, and had to work to try and keep ahead of the 3.30 time. The last 6 miles were tough, not helped by the wind picking up, causing a wind tunel effect, especially through the downtown areas. The end of the race was pretty cool, running through the Orioles Stadium. Andy, Jenni, Paul and James were about 400m from the finish!

It was a well organized race, although ptty tough! Amie and Loopy ran the half marathon.
