Looked forward to this race since the drive home last year, such a great route. Started by trying to get to the front pack through the crowd and by the beginning of the first stony ascent was in the first four. Moved to third by Beacon Batch only to lose my heel out of my shoe a minute later. 20 seconds of struggling to get it back on put me back into fifth but made my way back to third through the long-legged downhill sections before mile 7 drinks. Paced well on the ascent from miles 7 through 10, the gel I took just before the water station helping without doubt. I lost a place on the last stony path up out of the stable yard at mile 10, but kept 2nd and 3rd man in sight back across to BB and up to the aerial masts. Hit the tarmac with a mile to go and two guys just in sight, resigned to fourth place - a fantastic result, but pushing 5:10/M pace to try to gain. Through the last off-road section and some gravel paths with a few tall steps, I find I'm suddenly right behind the next guy. 200m to go and I pull alongside and past, eyes-on-stalks sprinting with all I have to take 3rd place overall. Just fantastic! Best ever race result at my favourite race. Perfect.
