Had a terrible night sleep and felt dreadful first thing. Headed off on the bike at 9 to cycle 10 miles down to Kirky. Took the mtb and main roads. In Kirky by 9.40, got lost and arrived at race at 9.55. Felt much better by this stage and the cycle was actually a really good warm up.
Gel and bottle of Lucozade in 30mins before start. Absolutely baltic at start, people in coats and hats - I almost went back for the jacket but really glad I stuck with just the helly (I did wear tights). A couple of brave chaps in vests!
Felt good from the start and no problems from hamstring. The hills are immediate and unrelenting. Little bit of a headwind coming back. Out and back course which of course means you know what's coming. Brutally steep hill just after the turn - saw much better runners than me struggling up it and my heart sank as I knew I'd be coming back up it in a couple of minutes! Managed to banish the negative thoughts and tried to push myself not to just sit at a comfortable pace. Wasn't passed after the first couple of k; gradually picked off people throughout the race and took my race nemesis on the last hill. Tough climb between 10 and 11k. Nice downhill/flat finish for last k.
Scary moment after 3k when a guy a little bit ahead off me collapsed half way up a hill with an epileptic fit. Thankfully I saw him again at the end and he was ok. Very well organised race and a good tough test of fitness. In this case I think the hill training around Milngavie stood me in pretty good stead. Overall pleased.
