Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Barcelona Marathon (251st)

Sore ribs or not, there was no way I was going to miss out on this race. It's been on my calendar for a long time and I was going to take part if it meant I walked most of it 😄

Went into this race very unsure and quite uneasy about how my ribs would feel for the entire race. Didn't warm up other than a bit of brisk walking to the start and around the starting pen and used the sunshine to keep me warm instead.

I had planned on really going for it before I had my fall so switched tactics to "see how it goes" with the prospect of a sub-2:45 being a real possibility. In the end the race turned out better than expected and also not quite as I'd have liked given the circumstances.

Started off pretty well and dropped into a good comfortable pace slightly faster than sub-2:45 pace. My ribs were tender but not excruciatingly and with some careful breathing I was able to keep the pain to a dull ache with the odd slightly more painful twitch here and there. Ticked over at this comfy pace for a good 28-29km before my stomach started to feel uncomfortable. I slowed quite a bit and tried to push through but in the end I had no choice but to visit a portapotty at the 35k mark for fear of sharting myself. On exiting the loo I tried to get back into a good stride but my ribs were noticeably more tender now after the pause and my mind really wasn't right any more. My stomach was also feeling quite tender.

In the end, I plodded in the last 7 or so km and finished comfortably under 3 hours. Thought my stomach would get the better of me the other way just after I crossed the finish line and dashed off to the side. This is quite evident from the finish line video 😆.

For the first time ever, I was beaten by my stomach in a race. I think a combination of the batter coated hot wings I had the afternoon before (I didn't realise they would be batter coated when I ordered them) and constantly bracing for the entirely of the race ultimately led to my stomach winning.

Despite all that, I did take time to take in the sights and enjoy the race as best I could. Lovely race and one I'll definitely consider again.
