London Marathon (543rd of 40149)

Still in the middle of my Comrades training so had no intentions of racing this. I didn’t taper other than taking yesterday off and went into the race with 85k in my legs for the week already. Went in with the aim of taking things easy and enjoy the race and atmosphere and aimed to finish somewhere between 2:50 and 2:55.

Start off well and soon found I’d dropped into a very good rhythm ticking over the kay’s At around 4mins per Kay, give or take a few seconds. Diligently ensured I remained as cool as possible by using every water station and shower to cool down. Only drank when thirsty, and even then only a mouthful or two.

This pace was great and really comfy but the heat really started to take it’s toll towards the end of the race. My mind was strong but the body was weak… just too hot to keep the pace up.

That said, my pacing worked a treat. I didn’t bonk and ended up finishing bang on in the middle of my goal times at 2:52:30 in 531st place.

Chuffed to bits with this “training run”. I think my Comrades training is coming on nicely. Got another training run marathon in just over two weeks, so hopefully it’s cooler. If it is, I may just attempt another sub-2:45.
