The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free.
But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient.
Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead.
Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?
What an event this is! We had entered some time ago but time always finds a way of eventually arriving at its destination and so we jetted off to Amsterdam to take part in the half marathon.
We had found a hotel in a fantastic location and that made our race preparation all the easier as everything was within walking distance. One we had hung around for a large part of the morning due to an unusual 1.20pm start, we headed off down to the Olympic Stadium, dropped off our bags, and proceeded to warm up.
It was a very warm and sunny day and we all knew that this would affect us, but we stuck to our race plans as best we could. The first four or five miles were actually quite dull as you are led out of Amsterdam to what appeared to be some motorways meaning there was a distince lack of support and not much to look at. However, after mile 5 we started to come back into urban areas and there were supporters aplenty, and music almost every step of the way.
I had shelved plans of a PB quite some time ago, shortly after dislocating my shoulder, but I wanted to run a good race hitting under 7.20 per mile as an average. I managed to keep this pace up until shortly after the halfway point when the (presumably) the heat started to exert its effects. I slowed down quite considerably in the second half of the race, but I don't think I could have pushed myself any harder than I was.
Being not entirely familiar with Amsterdam, I was happy when we entered the Vondelpark at about mile 10 as I knew this was close to the finish. I kept putting one foot in front of the other until I rounded a corner, entered the Olympic Stadium and managed a sprint finish round the track to cross the line with a little panache.
Overall, I was happy with my standard today taking other factors into the equation. I duly collected my medal, met the others, and we started to wander back to the hotel. We passed an outdoor bar en route and stopped for possibly the best Heineken I have ever had, while enjoying some Dutch music and watching the slower runners approaching the finish.
The evening that followed was one of hilarity, as they always are in Amsterdam. We enjoyed a fine steak meal, some good wine, and many, many lovely ales. It felt well deserved.
