VMLM 2014. Meh. Didn't have a particular goal, and thought 7:05 pace would be there or thereabouts for the current fitness. But if you don't *really* care about holding a certain pace, it's easy to drift off when it gets a bit grippy. Stands to reason really, I just don't think I had ever been in the situation like this before. I think it was just about 15-16 when it was obvious my legs were not for holding to 7:05 or even 7:10, but there was a bit of a lack of teeth-gritting to keep the gaps as small as possible. Quads feeling the worst, which only seems to be the case in my 'bad' marathons, or slower ones. It's been calves at the last 2 Dublins, for example. Felt like I was being passed by just as many as I was passing - but turns out that was complete bollocks.
I actually watched HR for the majority of the race (not having a particular time or pace plan). It held very steady at mid-150s for a very long time, although I was gently slowing to be fair.
