Binks Quite pleased with the time, especially the near equal times between the two runs.
I am still awful at cycling, I was holding m own on the uphill sections however I was petrified going downhill and kept braking. Got overtaken so many times, still I overtook about 50 on the last run without being overtaken at all, which was great. Not that I'm competitive..

Go-KL My first ever multi sport race, a duathlon, with an 8 mile run, 24 mile bike ride and 8 mile run around and up Box Hill. I was not a well bunny for this, my cold having gone to the chest and I had a hacking cough before during and after the race (it caused just 3 hours sleep which was not nice with a 4am wake up...).

Not knowing what to expect and worried about whether the cold would kill my energy, I went off very comfortably on the first run leg, chatting away until the first climb of Box Hill, where I made up a lot of places. I did the first run to the bike in 53:18, then went about my first ever transition - which actually went not too bad except for the troubles in trying to fasten the bike shoes and then zip up the gilet when on the bike.

The bike leg felt like a pleasant relief from the running, the numerous downhill sections gave plenty of opportunity to rest a little. And then the Box Hill climb itself was a breeze compared to any of the hills I encountered on the Exmoor Beast last week, barely troubling the granny gear, picking off plenty of cyclists and not overtaken by one single competitor. The same could not be said for the flat / downhill sections where I definitely lack the power of many other cyclists. I completed the bike section in 1:24:18 and set about nervously putting on the trainers, unsure of what my legs would do for the final run section.

The first mile or so was wobbly enough, but then pleasingly they loosened up nicely and I went about picking off 6 or so runners to the bottom of Box Hill, maintaining pace throughout. It was only on the final climb up Box Hill did I start to suffer at all, but still managed to pick off another 4 runners and could have taken another 3 had I just put in a bit of a sprint. The second run (Including time taken at transition) took 56:15.

After a lengthy coughing fit I recovered and reckoned I'd put in the approximate effort of a 20 mile race. If I were to do it again and was healthy I think I would have pushed a little bit harder throughout, especially on the first run. But as an event it was great fun and has whetted the appetite for a triathlon hopefully next year.

Incidentally the official mileages are a little approximate. Both googlemaps and my bike computer reckons a lap to be 7.5 miles rather than 8, although there is a lengthy transition period which adds some distance.
