I shall never do a max test! Must have a good reason to push myself to the edge ;-)

Spr,

I am with you. I prefer more motivation to get to max levels.

The key to a max test is building the intensity up bit by bit ... if you go too hard too early, then you get too knackered to reach max. This is why races are so good for a max test ... too long at high intensity, so nothing more to "give" at the end. A progressive session that builds the HR up bit by bit and ends with a sprint up a nasty hill shoudl do the trick.

Back in college I had workouts with teammates that allowed me to reach maxhr levels. Only we didn't wear hr monitors :(

Hi All. Having had my Garmin 405 for over a year thought it was about time to dust down the HR strap and give it a go this morning. Up til now I've always just used my mile pace while out on runs. So a few questions for you clever people, if you don't mind....
1) Today was a easy run, 5m, 9mm - avg HR was 70% - is that about right?
2) Avg bpm was 145 - my resting is 52 and I put in max as 183 (220 - 37) - about right?
3) something kept popping up about HR zones, I think it varied between 2 and 4. Garmin upload here on fetch says undefined. Am I meant to load up something with my zones?

Any guidance very much appreciated!

cheers

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
