I think it shows that training slow doesn't impede race performance.

Unless he would have been faster with some faster paced sessions...

Glenn - I think there is a point where you need speedwork, most people are too impatient and rush to add speed believing it is the fix for everything.

got the Parker book now - seems a little too good to be true in their introduction... is 4 weeks really enough of a trial?

Aiming to try and do max HR test next week and get properly started - still seeing some higher than expected HRs for runs so probably still in marathon recovery time..

think the hardest part for me will be having the discipline to do this. NEarly cracked on Sunday - 12miles at 9.09min/mile average - seems strange running over 2minutes slower than marathon pace and almost 3 minutes slower than 5k pace.

You looked at Hadd LouLou? With the miles you're doing might be good for you.

Fair enough Gobi - I do accept I probably run a lot of miles faster than I should when I look at things like McMillan calculators (although accepting they're not without problems)

Spr - looked at HAdd in June 2008 and gave it a very half baked attempt - will read it again. Understand the prinsiples.. its putting them into practice thats the problem!

LouLou - I work across pace charts and HR depending on the time of year.

Winter is Heart Rate for base, when I get serious I go back to the pace charts and cross reference them with Heart Rate.

Running faster than you need to do just compromises the quality sessions

I've certainly seen that in recent months - I've only recently done consistent tempo runs and more progressive long runs before Berlin marathon and feel that by doing recovery runs properly I'd be able to improve on these sessions. I really feel with the training I can go sub 3hr at the marathon which is my main aim at present - and if Hr training facilitates that then I'll do it.

seems to me that any mechanism that will make you train slower in the non key sessions :¬)

Your numbers say sub3 is more than attainable

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
