The Garmin probably uses percentage of max heart rate.

Just use the BPM that you know is the right one and ignore the zone thingy as IanRunner says.

Lucky, have you done a proper max HR test? The calculations is useless for most people...

Boingy
Just read through this thread from today, ha ha, really good stuff.

I went for a 68% 5 miles last night, which somehow has resulted in me hobbling around today with an ITB problem. :-(

Just checked you are right it is percentage of heart rate doh!!!

Yes did it properly on a treadmill directed by a cycling geak. Hit almost the same figure (within 2) in a recent race where I pushed myself to the limit so trust it is right.

I will do the MHR test again at the weekend.

Boingy, whatever you do before jumping down hole, don't try to run through ITB (if your sure that's what it is), I had ITB in a bad way which was caused by my running with locked back and seized hips. Once they got unlocked hey presto I was fine once inflammation in ITB went. Now as to what caused locked hips, I suspect a tight hamstring which I ignored, and the tight hamstring well probably poor mechanics which I have addressed.

Time will tell...........

Mike, no, there's no chance of me running through it at the mo. Going to give it some time to settle down. Will be back to 70% runs once I'm happy. Very frustrating though, the 70% runs are meant to be the easy ones, not the ones that injure me !! My hamstrings were quite tight now you come to mention it, and legs were still a bit tired after half marathon on Sunday. Lesson learned.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
