Another method of finding max heart rate, find some long portions of steps (I found an offroad soil and stone - 125 steps with steps varying between a metre long and a foot long, and similarly uneven height wise) about a minute and a bit to get up. Run up and down them 3 times. If I'd have taken my HRM with my I might know by now!!! The third set, about 3 metres from the end, I had to stop, I could not walk, I could not raise a leg, I had no desire to, heart was banging like a washing machine on spin cycle. Still tired today because of it!

I've seen the recommendation before to run up and jog down a hill 3 times, and measure at the top of the third. Been a while since I tried that, must give it a go.

Yeah I'd seen that, but as mentioned before I seem to "measure" hills, almost subconsciously, because I'm so use to having to get to the top of them, and can't get anywhere near max HR on them, even the steepest or mildest. Steps however for whatever reason completely screw with my expectations.

Chrisull, we probably have different experience of hills. I live in Norfolk. :)

Haha I'm there next week. Looking forward to the flat already. Although actually in a valley it seems!

Where are you going to? Actually, there are some very slopy bits in Norfolk which surprises some people. The Sheringham Parkrun is actually rated one of the toughest in the country - it's the one I was referring to above, where the second half is all uphill with a nasty steep slope towards the end (known as Heartbreak Hill, although after the incident I mentioned I think of it as Heartrate Hill).

I get like that quite often going up the three flights of stairs at work, usually with a laptop bag and a costa cuppa in my hands. I must do it with my hrm some day :)

This makes sense to me but will probably inflame others ;-)

"There's no getting round the fact that the only way to condition your legs is doing the mileage. Time on your feet is critical to harden your legs. High intensity intervals will make you quick, but they won't stop you falling apart after 3-4 hours of running."

Just about to start running again and having followed a h/r training approach when I 1st started running I'm planning to initially loosely follow the MAF approach to build up my fitness and to (hopefully) prevent me from overdoing it!! I remember this thread as being one of the best on FE!!

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
