I have a Garmin 735, with optical heart rate monitor. I don't train to heart rate at the moment but am interested in the data - especially if I don't have to wear a strap.

I was hoping I could use it as an HR monitor for rowing sessions. But it fails to detect my HR properly when I do indoor rowing, on the Cardio profile. Seems fine when running (always outside - no idea whether that makes a difference) but when rowing it's ridiculously low (sub-100 when I'm sweating buckets).

Any ideas why this might be? Does anyone else use these as an HR monitor for non-running indoor sessions?

No idea SK but that does sound strange. Maybe if no-one on here knows the answer perhaps a quick call to Garmin might give the answer?

Maybe your wrist flexes more when rowing than running. Is the wrist strap tight enough?

I use a Vivoactive HR and tighten it up in the gym (weights, machines etc) otherwise it registers too low.

I've heard that optical HRMs are v poor if you're cycling because of vibrations. But you don't get much vibration on a rower do you ?

I did find something online saying that it gets confused by the movement of the wrist - continually going backwards and forwards. I've not contacted Garmin yet but I will.

Next time I row I'll try tightening it. When I've used it for other inside stuff like Pilates (just once, for curiosity's sake) it seemed to be OK, hence my confusion about the rowing.

Crank it up on your wrist to see if that makes a difference. I wear my Fenix 24/7 and get very good data whatever the activity.

Thanks PP - by crank it up do you mean tighten it? Sorry to be dim...

I too thought that it might be too loose on your wrist, as others have said. But do you really want it really tight when erging?

Another possibility: could sweat be interfering with the sensor? When I row I often have sweat pooling around and dripping off the Garmin, presumably after running down my arms from the pits (sorry, that might be too much info).

For what it's worth, I tried an optical hrm once and just couldn't get it to work. I've stuck with the chest strap with my 920xt.
