It can depend on what type of runner you are. If you are better at endurance than speed, it might be better to start off at a decent pace and try to hold onto that pace as much as possible. Otherwise, try to start conservatively and attempt a fast finish. At the end of the day, running evenly paced isnt a bad idea. But pacing yourself correctly isnt easy - i find it difficult.

I find I need to go off fast in a 5k as it helps me mentally to know I have a buffer in case of slowing later. Splits today were 3:56 4:03 4:09 4:15 4:06 so you can see I had plenty in credit due to the faster start.

Well done PQ! I'm the same I need to feel I am starting well knowing I will slow on the hill for the second lap but also that we have a long down hill to finish! Lozza was on my shoulder to push me on which helped and splits are pretty even, although I had to "help" someone over the finishing line! A teenage lad right in front of me stopped just before the line! keep going I yelled and gave him a nudge!

Well done PQ . I like to start a bit conservatively, I hate to see the numbers slipping away. Also I'm finding it takes longer and longer to warm up - about 4km now

Dvorak I always run better when I cycle to parkrun (which I did today) as I too need a massive warm up. I only needed to do 800m warm up whereas if I hadn't cycled I would have needed about 2k at least.

here's my tactic from last weekend...
Arrive later than normal with kids in tow so you can't warm-up Forget Garmin so you can't get your pacing correct Run mile 1 waaay too hard Struggle in mile 2 and 3 as you've over-cooked yourself in mile 1 Decide to have a 'balls out' sprint race finish in the last 400 metres with a kid who's 23 years younger than you Beat him and take 25th place Drop to all fours and vomit bile in the finishers funnel
