“Soham railway station welcomes first passengers in 56 years”: bbc.co.uk Peterborough in one direction, Ipswich in the other.

Yes, various people in that bit of Cambs have been going on about what a economic difference it would make to the town and so on, but I struggle to see how a railway link to two places no-one wants to to go will make any impact at all. (Re-opening the Wisbech connection to Cambridge, on the other hand...)

The track beds were still largely intact through Haverhill when I lived there (a Beeching victim iirc), just before New Towns became a thing and would need transport links. Never happened of course. 🤷‍♂️

There's a group been trying to re-open it for decades - would need a lot of new bridges and station building though. A guided busway on broadly the same line was one of the paper proposals of a recent Cambridge & Peterborough mayor.

Most of the old track bed is now a pretty nice footpath (with a marked 5k running route) plus wildlife corridor, but a few small parts of it have been built over, including a supermarket on the old station site. The A11/A505 junction completely trashed the line of the track to Cambridge though.

Here's a recent article on the topic:

cambridgeindependent.co.uk

Since I know a bit about this sort of thing I should mention there's no way you could make a business case stack up. The "thousands of Haverhill residents" who have signed the petition supporting the idea should indicate how much they are willing to pay to subsidise it.

"A study from Cambridge University suggests that the saturated fats in dairy products are not the dietary problem we think":

thetimes.co.uk

"People who ate more saturated fats from red meat and butter, for example, were more likely to develop heart disease whereas those who consumed more from cheese and yoghurt had some protection against it. Consumption of milk — even the full-fat variety — had a neutral effect on heart health.

In any case, most road traffic leaving Haverhill in the morning does not go to Cambridge, according to the fairly extensive survey done a couple of years ago. I suspect if people were paying for local transport infrastructure, a faster road connection to the M11 would win hands down.

Agreed. Designed properly it would also speed up time to Whittlesford railway station.

[of course my experience is over 40 years old - when there was no such thing as the M11, and a site near Haverhill was being considered (along with Stansted) as the location for “London’s third airport” 😀😀. People will “go” wherever the best connections (and jobs) are - no?]

You can now travel from Portugal to Singapore by rail: thetimes.co.uk (£)

I would love to do that trip!

Very interesting - definitely fancy doing that. Hadn't realised that the old night train from Lisbon to Madrid has been cancelled too.

Hummus recipe:

Proper hummus is served with a drizzle of olive oil, rather than oil being a significant ingredient in its own right. This is what should go in it:

• 1½ cups cooked chickpeas or 1 (15-ounce) canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed*
• 3 tablespoons tahini
• 3 tablespoons lemon juice
• 1 garlic clove, mashed
• ¼ teaspoon salt, or more to taste
• Approximately 2-4 tablespoons room-temperature water or aquafaba, or more if needed
• Optional garnishes: extra virgin olive oil, sumac or paprika, finely chopped parsley or other herbs, whole chickpeas

This particular recipe from thymeandtoast.com but it’s typical of the Middle Eastern way of making it.
