at sub maximal intensities, heart rate variability is potentially influenced by quite a few factors, psychological and phyiological.

The 'easier' your run, the more likely it is you will get some variability from one day (or half day) to the next.

Or have I come in to the convo too late and totally missed the point?

Some days I would go for a very easy run on the morning of a big race, and because I was nervous, my ave HR would suggest I was out for a steady pace run.

Recent cold temperatures have kept my HR nice and low - conversely, HR increases surprisngly quickly on a hot day,

I've found stress to be an influence, too.

And also how long since last meal (either too long = hngry, or too short = full) can cause increases in effort/HR during a run.

Sorry, should have made some sort of list, really.

Had a fab run today...4.5mi at 65% WHR, and my pace was a lot quicker, 12.10mm as opposed to 12.40 at 70% WHR. shame i didn't have more time on hand, wanted to go on forever!

Tonight's run was 14.53 miles in 02:12:13 @09:06 pace, 56%WHR and average BPM of 125.

I didn't run to heart rate though, just to easy pace. It was a hilly course, three laps. I never saw the HR go above 135.

I'm really looking forward to Comrades :-)

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
