When I did stamford this year lums I set the virual partner and didnt look at HR at all, I went more by how I felt. If I had looked at my HR I would have slowed down and got a slower time than I was capable of. As it was I did hold myself back so I woudl have underachieved big time if I had used the HR,
That doesnt really answer your Q though about the 10 miler. I think you should beable to do a 10 miler at more than 80% though, look back at what you have done HMs at, wasnt Stamford over 80% and that was a longer race, a shorter race should be a higher HR

Yes and no hellen. Stamford was over 80% but I was a running machine back then. I will probably run to just under PB pace I think and see what the HR is.

I need a PB to get the buzz back, I need to run a sensible race as well without having to stop, and I want to run a negative split. There are a couple of hills at 2 and 9 miles so I am planning on something like 8:20 pace all round except mile 2 and 9 where I will add 20s or so. And the of course it's eyes out for the Last one.

My last 10 miler was 86% average Lums.

But I reckon just run it as hard as you feel comfortable with! The as hard as you don't feel comfortable with for the last couple! Forget the HR, go by feel on race day.

It will be a pressure race - have a side bet that alan1976 will not beat me by more than 11:47.

I think he will at the moment. My PB is 1:24:30 but I DID run 10m in 79:59 in training 15 months ago. Before i started HR training LOL. Couldn't do it now though.

Not sure what pace I will run my first marathon at, will use this weekends HM to guage how my training has gone over the winter and then decide. I wont do it to an HR though I will decide on a pace to run.

Tempo-ish kind of run tonight with Joopsy. 1m w/up and down with supposedly 5 x 9:00 miles inbetween.

We actually averaged 8:30 for the first 4 and then I put my foot down and did 7:20 for the last mile @ 85% (does that count sir!?)

The 8:30 miles were 75-79% so a good sign for my 10m which I want to run at 8:20

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
