IanR 85% is ambitious for the marathon!!!!
I ran my 3:12 at 82% (with drift up to just over 90% in the last 3 km)
And that was on the back of good training and a few races at the distance, and 2 ultras under my belt!!!!

A true 85%, unless you are REALLY well conditioned and have run plenty of marathons, would be a big ask, and much more likely to result in you crashing into the Wall at 19/20 miles!!!

People do manage 85% but that is not cos they run at their usual 85% pace (ie the pace they woudl do a tempo run) but because HR is elevated as EP has said. My marathon at around 80% actaully equated to the same pace that in training would have been closer to 70%.

A bit tongue in cheek but also a bit of seriousness - I think you need to relax a bit hellen!

My marathon PB was 75%, for the record.

Todays run was the same as Thursday's. Lets compare the two shall we...

Sat 23 9am R 6.2 00:58:02 09:22
70
Thu 21 6am R 6.2 01:02:00 10:00
71

Yep... Thursday was just a bad day!!

I can understand that, really, but remember that that demonstrates *why* we HR train. Those two runs my body put in exactly (pretty much) the same effort. The fact that one was a fair bit slower is irrelevant in the scheme of HR training. If you see what I mean.

Anyway, I'm off to the pub and then to the football, there's a cold black one with my name on it :)

Girlie
16,71 miles
Hr 74%
Not bad for an LSR. was quite fast at start, but slowed down.
Could have continued and doen scheduled 18 miles but my ar$3 injury complained and I decided to stop while I could still walk.

It's more of a dull ache but very annoying now.

My first ever 20 mile run today so quite pleased, but the last three miles were a real struggle, I think I went off too quick at the start because I felt so good. 20 miles @ 8:52 m/m 75%

well done stuart, you must be feeling really pleased with yourself to have done 20 miles. That HR is OK fo rparker (just) but if you struggled for the last 3 miles it may have, as you say been because you were too fast or it could have been because you were dehydrated or in need of some calories.

About This Thread

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
