Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

11.5 miles on the bike - longest ever! round some gorgeous villages where we want to go and live. Well, apparently according to my OH. I was too busy variously: glaring at the road for uneven bits designed to tip me off/grabbing the brakes and squeaking/watching my thighs *actually explode* up 3 evil hills/crying at the prospect at having to stop on a steep climb and not be able to unclip my feet in time. Overall av HR 60%, max 189 (panic moment!)
All quite stressful but managing more every time. Max speed 24.6 mph - downhill! how come I can go fast downhill when there's an uphill coming up but not when there isn't?!
thighs killing me now. humph.

think I must be recovering OK from FLM, have done the same 3.4 mile circuit 3 times now. Havnt done it for ages cos it was too short for my marathon training so cant compare stats before FLM, it is quite hilly as well.
Thur last week (2nd run after FLM) 73% WHR 10.36/mile
Sat 72% 11.01/mile (quite hot)
yesterday 68% 10.19/mile (not so hot but wore more LS and tights to try to acclimatise in case edinburgh is hot)!!

As part of my trianing for Edin I am going to wear more clothes than I need for running, run in the sun as much as possible, visit the sauna 2 or 3 times a week instead of once and when in the car put the heating right up. Am also continuing to wear my winter coat when I dont relaly need it!!

Hopefully these little things will all help me if edinb weather is like FLM. In addition, I have not told many people and plan to keep at that way as the more people who know, the more I talk about it and the more worked up I get whcih I think didnt help my HR!

the other advantage of running with all those clothes on is if Edinburgh is willie bauld, as it often is, you will be accustomed to running when dressed like the Michelin man ;)

Good run today, 85% and clocked my first sub 8min/miles since I started HR training - 7.50 and a 7.56.

Those times are what I use to train at on a tempo run pre HR training, any improvements now and I will be going faster than I've ever run before!! :-)

I was expecting a rubbish run today after two consecutive hard days, but my 70%WHR run today was almost a minute per mile faster than all my other runs at that effort level have been.

I'm sure it's because of the cooler weather.

interesting vel, was it the same route. It would not be fair if you made improvements in a matter of weeks and I have been at this HRM lark for months and not seen any improvement!!

I was a few seconds faster for 2% WHR by the looks of this:

Today I ran 5.08 in 00:41:36 @ 08:11 mins/mile and 70% WHR with 537 ft of ascent.

I wasn't noticeably faster due to cooler weather though I don't think...

No, Hellen, it was flatter than my usual route, but I'm sure the main factor was the weather. There's a hill at the end that I had to walk most of the way up on Tuesday. Today I was able to run up it without making the HRM chirrup at me, and that was after doing 5 more miles than I had on Tuesday.

It can't be adaptation because it was actually 12s/mile faster than my 75%WHR run yesterday.

In context, it was still slower than 10mm pace!

10/mile pace used to feel so slow to me when I started, am used to it now and it is OK. If it was slow for me then it must feel like a crawl for you vel

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
