I agree with Fenners to a degree, chatting lessens the perceived effort. Maybe I'm over the hill, or just poorly trained, but if I run so that I can't chat I'll pop sooner rather than later. My parkrun effort, while not really any faster, would have seen me unable to chat.

I don't agree as it's not that I choose not to chat I'm not able to. Last 3-5 miles of a half should be run in discomfort if at PB pace. Anyway each to his own :-)

Chatting is for ultras, and maybe the first half of a marathon. And training ;-)

We should also remember Parkrun isn't a race !!!!

But I am with Hunts, certainly for 5k, if properly racing then snatched words is the best I can manage, otherwise I am racing people that I know I can beat if I can chat to them. It differs as you go up in distance, 10k is much the same. HM I could probably converse early on but towards the end its more like a 5k. Marathons then talking for longer is possible until quite late on, until the point the brain becomes scrambles.

I remember RFJ catching me at mile 25 of VLM and the chat was something like

RFJ - alright...puff...Baz
Baz - How...puff...you...puff...doing
RFJ - fecked

Next chat was when I caught him after the finish and said well done on his PB.....

The first KM I am just about ok the next 4 I can just about muster left and right if I need to pass people

BAZ - please do not bring the pointless parkrun debate about racing in here

Did anyone else read the story about James Taylor. Really Scary.

His HR was 265 when admitted to hospital. Did make me wonder about Max HR tests though, albeit I realise that Taylor's condition is unusual

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
