Think I will do a hard session tomorrow - any suggestions? Planning at least 5 miles.

Ummm.... run 5m at tempo?!

Ahem. Sorry about that. Well, you can do 1m warm up, 3m tempo (85%) and 1m warmdown. Or do a warm up then do some hill repeats (that's what I'd do) and warm down.

Suppose I asked for that :)

Last time I ran 85% I was knackered after a mile :) Must try harder eh? If it doesn't go according to plan I will do what I did the other week I think. 1m warm-up then 1m @85%, 1m @70% 1m @85%, 1m warm down. NO decent hills near me and I'm not driving somewhere at 5 in the morning for the pleasure of running hills!

Hang on Lums. I reckon you'll have more hills near you than I do....

I often use a short hill and do 200m repeats. It's steep mind (the only one in the whole of Lodonshire)

Lums you could try 19.65 miles with no water. Oh, sorry, there's only ONE person stupid enough to do that - ME! :-)

BB, Elbee, bearing in mind I have Reading half on Sunday, what would you suggest training wise - take it nice and easy, say only three runs prior to Reading with a max of say 25 miles with NO speedwork OR busines as usual, 50 plus miles training with speedwork?

Well, I'm going to do something like this:

Mon: rest
Tues: 6m easy
Wed: 6-8m easy
Thurs: 4 easy
Fri: 4-6 with strides / couple of fast miles
Sat: 4m easy
Sun: world record at Reading

Something like that anyway. No hard sessions, but some fast stuff so you don't forget how to move quick...

That's compared to 45-70 mpw in the last few weeks

Like it BB, I was thinking along similar lines - apart from the world record maybe but I wouldn't put it past you! :-)

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
