Ahh Thanks very much for that El Bee.

ok then, so do you think that what I planned as easy runs could just be done about 70% but just maybe not as long as the others? I do fancy trying a short faster run - as you say, to stop me from going mad and so i don't feel like i'm always just plodding! What I might do is start really short and extend the time by a min or so as I get fitter.

By pretty unfit i really mean very very so :) actually i'm not that bad, i have seen a lot of improvement since I started running but it's a relative value so I guess it's hard to say exactly how unfit :)

1st March 2009 ... 8.3 miles at sub 70% wHR ... 1:20:19 @ 138 bpm avHR.

7th February 2010 ... same 8.3 mile run ... 1:17:21 @ 127 bpm avHR.

So 3 minutes faster despite 11 bpm lower HR. :-)

Hey there, did about a mile and a half slow run as a warm up. I got the max hr up to 200, my resting hr is 55.

You might get it a bit higher with a longer warm up that has a few strides and such in it, but if 150 feels really easy and 178 feels really hard then you probably got it about right!

Jacko at a guess it means you're getting faster (fitter)! I'd look to see a trend as opposed to comparing to runs (wind, stress etc can skew the figures). But at a guess I'd say it bodes well...

same run no extreme variants apart from last run was with heavy and tired legs due to high mileage so i think could be even lower . 2 races in jan and 2 course pb's to boot so definately getting fitter

Lower HR - faster pace!
As a snapshot it suggests your are better conditioned - or running more efficiently! :)

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
