I am not a big runner, I have never managed to get in the "zone" however I have found it to be the best way to keep fit and logging my mile/times helps me see the achievement. Since running London Marathon in 2004 I have suffered off and on with shin splints and this has been the main reason I have active months and months that are not so active (unfortunately the latter is the majority). My plan is to get my name down for a 10k or Half marathon during 2012 to motivate me to keep running and maybe try another marathon in 2013 however I am not holding my breath
